WE’RE ON A MISSION TO INCREASE PARTICIPATION IN THE STEM WORKFORCE

According to data published by the Maryland Public Schools Report Card, entering the 2024-2025 school year just 12.1% of Black students in Maryland were rated proficient in math. Hispanic/Latino students fared worse with only 11.9% math proficiency. Baltimore City for a second straight year finished lowest overall in Maryland at 10.2% math proficiency. Only 6.7% of Black city students were proficient in math and only 9% of Hispanic/Latino students were proficient in math, Unfortunately, the numbers are also bad for Native Americans and young girls in Baltimore. The lack of math and science proficiency and other factors have led to a cycle of underrepresentation in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) workforce. The National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics found that in 2021 of all races African Americans had the lowest participation rate in STEM careers.

If we do nothing these disparities will continue to persist.
